Is it worth switching a shop to LED lighting?
For most shops, yes. Shop lights are often on all day, every day, so swapping fluorescent tubes and halogen spots for LED usually makes a noticeable difference to running costs and to how often lamps need changing.
LED also runs much cooler than halogen, which matters for stock under spotlights, and good fittings show colours accurately. That's important for clothes, food, jewellery and anything where customers judge by eye.
We convert whole shops or one area at a time: ceiling panels, track and spotlights for displays, window lighting on timers, and back-of-house lighting in stock rooms. Sensors in stock rooms and toilets mean those lights don't burn all day when nobody's in. Send a few photos of the ceiling and a fitting close up, and we'll give you one fixed price.
Can you add sockets for tills, card machines and displays?
Yes. Most shops end up with extension leads running under counters and behind displays, which is untidy and can overload a circuit. We add sockets where the equipment actually sits, and a dedicated circuit where a till point or display needs one.
Window displays can go on a timer so they light up in the evening without anyone remembering to switch them on. If you're rearranging the shop floor, a quick plan of where the counters and displays will go helps us price it accurately. Floor sockets are another option for counters or displays in the middle of the shop.
- Till points
- Sockets under the counter for tills, card machines, printers and routers.
- Displays and fridges
- Sockets placed where the units stand, not across a walkway.
- Window displays
- Switched or timed supplies for window lighting and screens.
Can you wire a shop sign?
We can provide the electrical supply for an illuminated sign, with a switch or timer, and connect a sign once it's fixed in place. The sign itself, and fixing it at height, is usually the sign maker's job, especially where access equipment is needed.
Illuminated signs often need advertisement consent from Leicester City Council or your local council, and a lease may need the landlord's approval too, so check both before ordering. We work with whatever the sign maker supplies and agree with them where the cable needs to come out. If an older sign runs all night with no switch or timer, adding one cuts running costs and makes it easy to isolate safely.
Can you help with shop security?
Yes. We install CCTV systems for shops, change and upgrade locks, and repair entrance doors and closers that don't shut properly.
CCTV needs some thought about where cameras point. If your cameras record customers, data protection rules apply, so signs telling people CCTV is in use are expected, and the ICO's guidance is worth reading. We position cameras to cover the till, the door and the stock room without pointing into neighbours' property. Most systems can be viewed on a phone, so you can check the shop after hours, and we show you how to save footage if the police ask for it.
When staff leave or keys go missing, a lock change the same week is often cheaper than the risk of leaving it.
Can you fit out a unit for a new tenant?
Yes. Taking on a new shop usually means a list of jobs before opening day: lighting, sockets, repairs, a toilet or sink that needs work, doors and a coat of paint. We price the whole list as one fixed price and work to your opening date.
Many leases require the electrics to be inspected or certified, so it's worth having an EICR done before you open if there isn't a recent one. We carry out EICRs and the remedial work.
If the previous tenant left old fittings, cables to nowhere and redundant signage, we make them safe or remove them as part of the price. Anything hidden that turns up once work starts is shown to you and priced separately before we go further.
What does a shop need for emergency lighting and inspections?
Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 you must keep the electrics safe, and guidance commonly suggests an EICR every five years for shops. Your lease, insurer or the report may set a shorter interval.
Emergency lighting on escape routes must be maintained by the responsible person under fire safety law. BS 5266-1 calls for a monthly function test and an annual full-duration test, logged each time. We carry out both, plus PAT testing as needed, each as a fixed-price job you can book on a regular basis, with no contract. Shops with stock rooms, basements or upper floors often have more escape-route fittings than people realise, so it's worth counting them before the first test.
Can the work be done before opening or after closing?
Usually, yes. We're open every day from 8am to 8pm, so jobs can be done before the shutters go up, after closing or on a quieter day. Bigger jobs can be split into sections so part of the shop keeps trading.
Where the power has to go off, we agree the time first and keep it short, so fridges and tills aren't affected for long. The fixed price is the same whichever slot you choose, whether you're in Leicester city centre or on a high street in Oadby, Wigston or Loughborough.
