Do you come over to Nuneaton from Leicester?
Yes. We come across on the A47 through Hinckley and over the A5, which is roughly where Leicestershire ends and Warwickshire begins. Nuneaton sits with Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council rather than a Leicestershire council, but that makes no difference to the work we do or the regulations we follow.
At about 13 miles, it's further than our city jobs, so we're straight with you about how it works. Travel is included in your fixed price; distance is one of the things that shapes it, along with the job itself. The best value comes from grouping jobs: a faulty light, a running toilet and a gate that won't latch can all go on one request and one visit.
When the diary allows, we come out the same day, but this far out it's less likely, so it's worth getting in touch early rather than waiting until something becomes urgent.
What should I look at in an older terrace near Nuneaton town centre?
Start with the fuse board and the back of the house. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the centre, in places like Chilvers Coton and Attleborough, have usually been updated in stages, and the extensions at the back are where older work tends to hide.
These are the points we check first when you send photos or we visit:
- The consumer unit
- Older boards may not give every circuit RCD protection.
- The back-addition bathroom
- Often added later, sometimes with poor ventilation and condensation.
- Kitchen sockets
- Too few sockets means extension leads, which is worth fixing.
- Gutters over the back passage
- Leaks here can cause damp in a solid-walled terrace.
Can you update an inter-war or post-war semi in Nuneaton?
Yes, and these homes often need more than one thing at once. The semis and estates built between the wars and after 1945 are solid houses, but many were wired for a fraction of the appliances people use now.
Typical requests are more sockets in the kitchen and living room, an electric shower in place of an old mixer, better lighting, and a charge point on the drive. Where the board is old, it may need replacing before anything new can be added safely, and we'll tell you that at the pricing stage, not halfway through the job.
All work follows the current Wiring Regulations (BS 7671, 18th Edition). Nuneaton has also seen a lot of new-build growth, and those homes have their own needs: extra outside sockets, TV mounting and shelving are common.
Can landlords with houses in Nuneaton group their safety work?
Yes, and at this distance it makes sense to. In England, private landlords need an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) at least every five years, a smoke alarm on every storey and a carbon monoxide alarm in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance. Any remedial work the report lists must be done within 28 days, or sooner if the report says so.
If you have two or three properties in Nuneaton, we can plan the inspections, alarm checks and small repairs into one day where access allows, with each property priced separately. Gas safety certificates are not our work; those need a Gas Safe registered engineer.
