How do you mount a TV on a dot-and-dab wall in Hamilton?
With fixings made for the gap. Many of Hamilton's 1990s and 2000s homes have dot-and-dab walls: plasterboard stuck to blockwork with blobs of adhesive, leaving a hollow space behind. Ordinary plugs either pull out or crush the board when tightened.
We use fixings that pass through the plasterboard and grip the block behind, with a spacer so the board isn't squeezed. Upstairs and on internal walls, newer homes often have timber or metal stud partitions instead, which need a different approach. We check which you have before drilling.
If you want the cables hidden, the hollow behind dot-and-dab can sometimes help, and we can add a socket behind the screen at the same visit.
Can a newer Hamilton home take an EV charger?
Usually, and it's often simpler than in an older house. Many Hamilton homes have a driveway or an integral garage, and the consumer unit is typically more modern, often in the garage or under the stairs.
We still check the main fuse, the board and the cable route from your photos, because a modern board can be full or lack the right protection for a charger. Every charger we fit meets the smart charge point regulations, and we notify National Grid Electricity Distribution as required.
If the car parks on a drive at the front and the board is in the garage, the cable route is usually short and tidy. Where the board is at the back of the house, we plan a route along the outside wall or through the loft and show you before pricing.
Why do newer houses never have enough sockets?
Because they were wired for the minimum, not for how people live now. A house built in the 1990s or 2000s may have one double socket where you now need power for a TV, router, games console and chargers.
The common fixes are straightforward:
- Extra or double sockets
- Added to the existing circuit or a new one, depending on the load.
- USB sockets
- In bedrooms, kitchens and by the sofa.
- An outdoor socket
- Often fed straight through the wall from an indoor one.
- Outdoor lights
- Motion-sensor or dusk-to-dawn lights at the front door, drive and garden.
What's different about older homes in Humberstone?
Mainly the age of the wiring. In Hamilton, the questions are usually about fixings and capacity. In Humberstone's older village and the early 20th-century Humberstone Garden Suburb, it's more often about the condition of the wiring itself, older fuse boxes and lighting circuits with no earth.
We test before we quote for anything larger, so you know whether a new consumer unit is enough or some rewiring is needed. Humberstone Garden Suburb and parts of the village are, as we understand it, conservation areas, so check with Leicester City Council before changes to the outside of the house.
Can you do a list of small jobs in one visit?
Yes, and that's often the best value. A typical list might include a TV bracket, two extra sockets, a sticking door and a curtain pole, mixing electrical and handyman work. It all goes on one request and one fixed price.
If you've just moved in, flat-pack furniture, shelves and blinds can go on the same list. Send photos of each job with a short note, and we'll come back with a single price covering the lot.
We're not far away, and when we can, we come out the same day.
