Does an older terraced or post-war house in Coalville need rewiring?
Not necessarily. Coalville grew up around coal mining, and much of its housing is terraced or post-war. Many of those homes have been rewired since, but some still have wiring or fuse boards that are well past their best.
The only reliable way to know is an inspection or a survey visit. Some homes need a full rewire, others need a few circuits replaced, and some only need the board itself replacing. A new consumer unit is usually part of a full rewire; your quote explains how that part is handled. A rewire is normally priced after a survey visit, and you get one fixed price for the agreed work.
Rewiring means lifting floorboards and cutting channels for cables, so there is some disruption. We plan the work room by room and agree it with you first.
- Fuse box with rewireable fuses
- Fuse wire in ceramic holders rather than switches.
- No RCD protection
- No test button on the fuse board.
- Old rubber or fabric-covered cable
- Often seen in lofts or under floors.
- Scorch marks or warm sockets
- Stop using them and get them checked.
Should an old fuse box be replaced first?
Often, because a modern consumer unit adds RCD protection that older boards lack. But the wiring matters as much as the board.
It is quite common for a new board to reveal faults in old wiring, because the RCDs trip where the old fuses didn't. That is why testing the circuits comes first. We test, trace faults and tell you what we find. If the board itself needs replacing, Norman will tell you plainly.
If a circuit needs repair, we show you and price it separately.
What helps with condensation and damp patches in older homes?
Better ventilation is usually the first step. Older terraces and post-war houses often have small kitchens and bathrooms with no extractor fan, or one that has stopped working, so moisture from cooking and showers ends up on walls and windows.
We fit and replace extractor fans, including models with a humidity sensor or an overrun timer, and check that the ducting actually leads outside. Leaking pipes and dripping overflows can also cause damp patches, and those are straightforward to fix.
We don't treat rising damp or do structural work. If a damp patch doesn't match a leak or a lack of ventilation, a damp specialist is the right person to see it.
What about the newer estates around Coalville?
The newer estates are a different story. A lot of new housing has been built around the edges of Coalville in recent years, and those homes generally have modern wiring and plumbing.
The requests there are mostly additions: an EV charger on the drive, extra sockets, outdoor lighting, a TV on the wall, shelving, or fencing for a new garden. Most of these can be priced from photos.
Do you cover Whitwick, Thringstone and Ibstock?
Yes, all three. Each has its own mix of older cottages and terraces alongside newer homes, so the work varies from house to house.
Whichever village you're in, you can put electrical, plumbing and handyman jobs on one request. A new fuse board, a fan in the bathroom and a dripping kitchen tap can all be done in one visit, at one agreed price.
