Do you cover Birstall, Syston, Thurmaston and Rothley?
Yes. These places sit north of the city along the A6 and the Soar valley, near Watermead Country Park and the Birstall park and ride, and all come under Charnwood Borough Council. They are about 5 miles from our base in Leicester LE3.
The housing here is mixed: older cottages and terraces in the village cores, inter-war and post-war homes around them, and newer estates on the edges. Because the mix is so wide, the jobs vary too: a tripping fuse box in an older house, an EV charger on a newer estate, or lighting in a Thurmaston unit.
We price each job the same way, from photos or a survey visit, with one fixed price agreed first. Several jobs, even across trades, can go on one request and one visit. Travel is included in your fixed price; distance is simply one of the things that shapes it, along with the job itself.
Can you work on older cottages in Rothley or Syston village centre?
Yes, with a bit more care. Older houses often have solid walls, uneven plaster and electrics that have been updated in stages, so we look at photos closely and may suggest a survey visit before pricing.
Parts of some village centres are conservation areas. Inside work such as new sockets or circuits doesn't usually need planning permission, but changes to the outside, such as a new external light, camera or vent on a front wall, may be restricted. If in doubt, check with Charnwood Borough Council before we start.
Where cable can't be hidden without damaging old plaster, we can talk through neat surface options with you, such as slim trunking painted to match the wall.
Do you do three-phase and lighting work in Thurmaston units?
Yes. Thurmaston has a good spread of retail parks and industrial units, and we work for small businesses as well as homeowners.
Typical work in units like these:
- Three-phase supplies and connections
- For compressors, machinery and workshop equipment.
- LED high-bay and batten upgrades
- Replacing tired fluorescent or older high-bay lighting.
- Extra power and data for new layouts
- When a unit is refitted or reorganised.
- Fault finding and planned maintenance
- Keeping the site safe and running.
What do businesses need to keep on top of?
Safe electrics, kept that way. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 put a duty on employers to maintain electrical systems so they don't cause danger.
In practice that usually means periodic inspection at intervals suited to the premises, emergency lighting tested monthly with a full annual duration test (BS 5266), and faults fixed promptly. Three-phase work is priced after a survey visit, since we need to see the supply and the equipment rating plates. Every job is one fixed price, agreed before we start.
If you run a shop or unit and also own or let a house nearby, the jobs can go on one list. We keep the pricing clear for each address, so the business and household costs stay separate on the paperwork.
What about the newer estates around Birstall and Syston?
Newer homes usually have modern wiring, so the requests tend to be additions: an EV charger on the drive, air conditioning in a loft bedroom or garden office, outdoor sockets and lighting.
A home charger must meet the smart charge point regulations, and we notify National Grid Electricity Distribution as required.
Newer homes can bring smaller jobs too:
- Outdoor sockets and lighting
- For the garden, patio or driveway.
- TV mounting and shelving
- Fixed to suit the wall construction.
- Electric heaters for garden rooms
- Panel heaters on a suitable supply.
